Every child deserves the opportunity to become as independent and confident as possible.
Adaptive skills are the everyday abilities that allow children to participate successfully at home, school, and in their community. These include communication, self-care, social interaction, safety awareness, organization, emotional regulation, and problem-solving.
At Gittelson Psychology Services, we recognize that every child develops differently. Our Adaptive Skills Training program is individualized to meet each child's unique strengths, challenges, and developmental goals.
Our goal isn't simple to teach a skill. It's to help children use that skill confidently in everyday life.
Many children struggle to develop adaptive skills because the brain is working overtime to manage challenges with attention, executive functioning, sensory processing, emotional regulation, or communication.
When a child's nervous system is constantly overwhelmed, learning new skills becomes much harder.
That's why our approach begins with regulation.
For many children, improving attention, emotional regulation, and executive functioning through Neurofeedback at GPS Neuro Center helps create a stronger neurological foundation for learning, Once the brain is better regulated, children are often more available to learn, practice, and generalize adaptive skills across environments.
We don't see Neurofeedback and Adaptive Skills Training as separate interventions - we see them as complementary pieces of the same journey toward greater independence.
Expressing needs, following directions, carrying conversations, and understanding others.
Getting dressed, brushing teeth, hygiene routines, meal preparation, chores, and organization.
Making friends, understanding social cues, taking turns, sharing, problem-solving, and participating in group activities.
Planning, organization, flexibility, impulse control, time management, and completing tasks independently.
Understanding personal safety, community safety, and making appropriate decisions.
Shopping, ordering food, navigating community environments, and participating with increasing independence.
Our team evaluates not only what skills a child is struggling with, but why those skills may be difficult.
We consider:
When appropriate, we may recommend QEEG Brain Mapping and Neurofeedback through GPS Neuro Center to better understand how the brain is functioning and to support the neurological systems involved in learning and self-regulation.
From there, we develop individualized adaptive skill goals that are meaningful for the child and family.
Whether your child is working toward greater independence at home, school, or in the community, we're here to help.
